Chinese Herbal Medicine
Ancient Wisdom, Modern Application
Chinese herbal medicine is one of the oldest continuously practiced medical systems in the world, with a documented history spanning over 4,000 years. This sophisticated healing art uses naturally occurring plants, minerals, and other substances to create powerful yet gentle therapeutic formulas that work in harmony with your body's natural processes.

The Art and Science of Herbal Formulation
Unlike Western medicine, which often uses single compounds to target specific symptoms, Chinese herbal medicine employs carefully balanced combinations of multiple herbs working synergistically together. Each formula is like a symphony, with individual herbs playing different roles:
"Emperor" herbs serve as the primary therapeutic agents
"Minister" herbs enhance their effects
"Envoy" herbs guide the formula to specific parts of the body
"Assistant" herbs harmonize the entire formula
This sophisticated approach allows the herbs to work together more powerfully than any single ingredient could alone.

Your Personalized Treatment
Our practitioners create custom herbal prescriptions based on your unique constitution, current health concerns, and individual pattern of symptoms. During your consultation, we'll examine not just your primary complaint but also your energy levels, sleep patterns, digestion, emotional state, and other factors that reveal your body's underlying imbalances. This comprehensive assessment allows us to select herbs that address both your symptoms and their root causes.
Standalone or combined treatment: Herbal medicine can be used on its own or combined with acupuncture for enhanced results. Many patients find that herbs and acupuncture complement each other beautifully, but herbs-only treatment is also highly effective for many conditions.

What Herbal Medicine Treats
Chinese herbal medicine is a comprehensive system that can address virtually any health concern. Common conditions we treat include:
-
Digestive disorders
-
Hormonal imbalances and menstrual issues
-
Immune system support and chronic infections
-
Respiratory conditions
-
Skin conditions
-
Chronic pain and inflammation
-
Sleep disturbances
-
Stress and anxiety
-
Autoimmune conditions
-
Metabolic issues
-
General wellness and prevention
This list represents what we see most frequently, but herbs can effectively treat many other conditions not mentioned here. While herbs work for most health concerns, they work particularly well for chronic conditions and systemic imbalances. For acute pain, acupuncture may be more immediately effective, though herbs can support longer-term pain management and reduce inflammation.

How Herbs Are Prepared and Taken
At our clinic, all herbal formulas are prepared as concentrated water decoctions, following the most traditional and effective method of herbal preparation. Our herbs are cooked like traditional teas (water and herbs simmered together in a pot), but the resulting liquid is then concentrated down to a potent extract. This means that instead of drinking large amounts of tea throughout the day, you only need to take one teaspoon of this concentrated formula twice daily.
All herbal formulas are professionally cooked by our trusted manufacturer using high-quality, tested ingredients, then mixed in-house by our practitioners to create tailored formulations specific to your individual needs. This ensures both safety and maximum therapeutic effectiveness.

Dosing: Your practitioner may give you specific instructions for taking your herbs, and you should always follow their guidance. Generally, the standard dose is one teaspoon of your concentrated herbal formula twice daily. Consistency is key, as herbs have compounding effects that build over time.
Missed doses: If you miss a dose and remember the same day, you can double up on your next dose. For example, if you forgot your morning dose, you can take a double evening dose. However, if you miss an evening dose and remember the next morning, simply continue with your regular dosing schedule.

Preservation and Shelf Stability
Alcohol-free options: For children and adults who cannot have alcohol, we use glycerin to preserve the formula instead. Glycerin is a natural, safe preservative that also adds a touch of sweetness to the formula. Because more glycerin is needed than alcohol to achieve the same preservation effect, glycerin formulas are typically less potent and may require higher dosing for adults. For children, standard dosing remains the same.
Adult formulas: We preserve adult herbal formulas with small amounts of alcohol to maintain freshness and stability. This alcohol is used only for preservation, not as part of the extraction process.
Herbs for Children
Chinese herbs work remarkably well for children when they're willing to take them. Children's bodies are highly responsive to herbal medicine, often showing faster results than adults.
Making herbs kid-friendly: To make the experience more pleasant for children, we use glycerin preservation instead of alcohol, which adds natural sweetness to the formula. We also often add orange flavoring to pediatric formulas to make the taste more palatable and enjoyable.
Respecting your child's boundaries: We never recommend forcing children to take their herbs, as this can create negative associations and even be traumatizing. Instead, we work with parents to find creative ways to help children accept their medicine willingly. If a child refuses herbs despite efforts to make them more palatable, we focus on other treatment modalities that work for that individual child.

About the Taste
We want to be honest with you: Chinese herbal formulas have a distinctly bitter and strong flavor that can be surprising if you're not expecting it. However, this bitter taste is not an unfortunate side effect but rather an important part of the healing process. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the bitter flavor has specific therapeutic properties that help clear heat, reduce inflammation, and support detoxification.Learning to tolerate and even appreciate this flavor is part of embracing the full healing potential of the herbs. Many patients find that they actually begin to crave their herbal formula as their body recognizes its healing benefits.
Why Herbal Medicine Works
Chinese herbs work by gently guiding your body back toward balance and optimal function. Rather than forcing dramatic changes, they support your natural healing processes, strengthen your constitution, and address imbalances before they manifest as serious illness. Many herbs have been studied extensively and shown to have anti-inflammatory, immune-supporting, digestive-enhancing, and stress-reducing properties that complement and enhance acupuncture treatment.
